FAITH and HOPE: Involuntarily present in all

Goodbye! See you later! The moment ‘later’ is behold our control, but we often refer to it. This is because we hope that it shall surely come to pass.

Where do you want to find yourself in the next five years? That has become a common question from my fellow interviewers. One proceeds to give their plans and aspirations for the future, which clearly lies outside their locus of control. This is because they hope they shall live to accomplish their desires and plans. They not only hope, but are highly convinced that whatever their plans are, they shall be able to meet them. If this passion has deep roots from within the individual, such people surely come to succeed in their plans.

FAITH is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see (Hebrews 11:1)

Whether an individual has some religious attachment or not, I am convinced that every living human being has an element of faith. Strong faith in a number of instances. That is why we have strategic plans into the future. Take a simple example of scheduling for the next day’s activities at your desk. It sounds rather obvious, but in case you did not have real conviction of getting into the office the next day, you may not even plan at all.

“Though deceitful, hope is the last thing that dies in a human being” Hope keeps us going. It is termed as deceitful because all our hopes do not necessarily add up to anything. This is how frustration comes in. However, hope at least keeps us going up to the point of frustration. Then we develop new hope and start all over again. When hope dies in us, we are dead as well. Consider an individual who commits suicide. They must have lost all hope. They could not see any single reason why they ought to continue existing.

ATTITUDE is termed to give us a 100% result of our effort. In its totality, our attitude ought to achieve the 100%. The weaker it becomes, the lesser the achievement. Faith and hope help us to achieve the right level of attitude. We achieve a positive attitude in equal measure of the levels of faith and hope in us. For super result, we need a perfect mix of faith and hope.

Ever came across and individual who talks of things hoped for with great confidence? To an extent of not giving room to ‘what ifs’? We term such persons as obsessed, possessed or perhaps crazy. Surprisingly, they live to achieve their desires. If they do not, then be sure they are dead. This kind of conviction takes them to any extremes as they chase their visions. Often ready even to face death. What do you think drives the minds behind the Solar Impulse 2?

Certainly, there is one who made the universe, everything in it and fixed the order as we see it today. He is surrounded by mystery. He is a mystery himself. No one ever made an account of Him successfully. Not even Christ himself. Whether you pledge allegiance to Him or not, what is clear is that you do so unconsciously, constantly and daily. There are those things you can neither control nor direct. That is where He comes in. The back to everything stops with Him who made the universe. There can’t be debate on this.

For ordinary things we do not choose whether to be hopeful or not. We are hopeful by default. This kind of believing or being hopeful is quite weak. It may not distinguish the great from the commons. The level that makes such distinction has to be nurtured in us. A lot of effort goes into growing it.

Before I wind up, let me mention about MEDITATION and how it can strengthen the two above. Now that faith and hope is more of the state of mind than reality, meditation can help make the state stronger. Via meditation, we can convince our minds of great things that the body may find outrageous. Positive meditation can strengthen our minds to achieve whatever it is that we convince ourselves of. Negative meditation too has the power to weaken our energies and ruin us.
